DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GENERAL AND TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION

Technical and general communication specialists play different roles in the global communication market. 

General communication 

General communication is defined as the way in which a person can communicate through his or her words, deed, or actions.  


General Communication serves five major purposes: to inform, to express feelings, to imagine, to influence, and to meet social expectations. 


Characteristics of general communication: 

Contains a general message 

Informal in style and approach 

No set pattern

Mostly oral 

Not always for a specific audience 

No use of technical terms or graphics 

 

Technical communication 

Technical communication, also known as tech comm, is planning and executing information for a specific audience.  


Tech communicators are responsible for understanding the needs of their target audience, communicating that information to them in an appropriate way, and meeting those needs successfully. 


Technical communicators collaborate and work together with designers, media, engineers, analysts, project management, quality control, sales, logistics, and customer support to ensure that accurate and relevant information is supplied via websites, web apps, books, brochures and other printed materials (social media), meetings. 


Characteristics of technical communication:  

Contains a technical message 

Mostly formal in style and approach 

Follow a set pattern 

Both oral and written 

Always for a specific audience 

Frequently involves jargon, graphics, visuals, etc
