SITE stands for Satellite Instructional Television Experiment.
It was one of the most important
experiments in the history of Indian television broadcasting.
SITE was conducted in 1975–76 with
the objective of using satellite television to provide educational and
development-oriented programmes to people, particularly in rural India.
India was a developing country with
a large rural population. Television was seen as a possible tool for reaching
large numbers of people with educational and development information.
India collaborated with the United
States and used the ATS-6 satellite for the experiment.
