GREEK REFERENCES IN LA BELLE DAME SANS MERCI

Few Greek references:

Medusa – In Greek mythology she belonged to one of the three winged female monsters. There other two were called the Gorgons, they were called Steno and Erykah. They had snakes for hair and turned all who looked at them to stone. Medusa was alone mortal and was slain by Perseus.

Harpies – A mythical monster with the face of a woman and the body of a vulture. They defiled whatever they touched. Juno (Jupiter’s wife) sent them to deprive the blind Phineas of food.

Sirens – Sea nymphs of classical myth whose sweet singing lured listeners to their doom.

Scylla – Six headed monster who preyed upon sailors.

Lilith – Female night monster. She was a nocturnal wandering demon especially dangerous to children and women in childbirth. She is also known as the seductress of men. It is a sematic name for the beautiful and licentious (person having lose morals), unmarried harlot (prostitute) who seduces men in streets and fields.
