SOCIAL AND CULTURAL AWAKENING IN THE 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY (INDIA)

 

RAJA RAM MOHAN ROY

He is rightly been called the father of Modern India. He was born in a well to do family and had the knowledge of languages like Persian, Sanskrit, Arabic and English. He published a thesis – a gift to Monotheists. He established the Bramho Samaj. He was a man of liberal religious views and was friendly to all religions. He started a paper called Bramhosevadhi.

He was not only a social reformer but also a great patron who spread the knowledge among the people. He represented popular demands and grievances before the government. After his death Devendranath Tagore the grandfather of Rabindranath Tagore looked after the activities of the Bramho Samaj.

 

KESHAB CHANDRA SEN

Was another important member of the Bramho Samaj. He took a leading part in the passing of the marriage act in 1872. He toured India and spread the message of Bramho Samaj.
